48 Hours: The Enemy Within, a CBS News broadcast on October 12, 2000.

Family and friends of Vicki Robinson were distressed and angry, as well as disappointed at this CBS production. Distressed and angry because the distorted and one-sided approach painted a false picture of Vicki as a distant, uninvolved mother, and promoted Valessa as a confused and neglected child. Our disappointment with CBS comes from their choice to not provide other parents ensnared in similar dilemmas with some concrete, constructive information on what to do with a child living a life of vicious defiance.

In truth, Vicki was a deeply loving and caring mother, struggling to raise her children without support, either financial or emotional, from their father. She was gentle and kind, with a sunny and optimistic disposition, and she was at a loss for how to control her wayward daughter. Valessa refused to give up drugs and alcohol use; running away from home repeatedly when her will was thwarted and threatening violence to her mother whenever she was disciplined.

Like other single parents in similar situations, Vicki tried many ways to confront and correct her daughter. Vicki never gave up her belief that one day she would be able to find a way to reach and save Valessa from herself. Valessa made many choices along the path that led directly to her mother's murder. 48 Hours could have used their coverage of this devastating tragedy to help other troubled children and their families find assistance and outside intervention resources. It was for this purpose that the Vicki Lyn Robinson Foundation and website were created, to identify resources available in each state, perhaps saving a parent and child relationship so they can grow in love together again.
